Meta is tightening teen safety on Instagram and extending its successful Teen Accounts model to Facebook and Messenger.

Within the next few months, users under 16 will no longer be able to start Instagram Live sessions or disable the DM nudity-blur filter unless a parent expressly approves these changes.

Teen Accounts, launched last year, already default minors into private profiles, restrict who can message them, limit nighttime notifications and suggest breaks after 60 minutes.

Adoption is high: 97 % of 13-15-year-olds have kept the default settings and 94 % of surveyed U.S. parents say the controls help.

Teen Accounts now cover 54 million profiles and will debut today for teens in the US, UK, Australia and Canada, with expansion worldwide later this year.
