Instagram has announced new privacy protections for younger users.
The platform will now offer "teen accounts" as the default for users aged 13 to 17.
With a teen account, messaging and content settings will be more restricted than a standard profile by default. Only approved followers can direct message or comment on a teen's posts.
Teen profiles will also have more limited advertising and will not be included in "Suggested Users" or "Accounts to Follow" features.
The goal is to create a more positive experience for younger members by limiting unwanted contact from strangers and exposure to potentially inappropriate content that may be seen elsewhere on the site.
The new teen accounts focus on safety and privacy as top priorities for teenage Instagram users.
